What Size Dog Bed Does My Dog Need? A UK Buying Guide
Share
You buy a lovely new bed, and your dog… ignores it. Sound familiar? More often than not, the culprit is size or style rather than the dog being fussy. Dogs sleep for a large part of the day, and the right bed supports their joints, keeps them warm, and gives them a secure place to switch off. Here's how to get it right.
Step 1: Measure your dog
Measure your dog while they're lying stretched out on their side — nose to the base of the tail for length, and the widest point for width. Then add 15–20cm to each measurement. That extra margin lets a sprawler stretch out fully; a bed that's exactly their body length will feel cramped.
It's also worth weighing your dog, as many beds are rated by weight range as well as dimensions.
Step 2: Watch how your dog sleeps
Your dog's favourite sleeping position tells you which style suits them:
- Curlers (dogs who sleep nose-to-tail in a ball) love a bolster or donut bed with raised, cushioned sides to nuzzle into. These are especially reassuring for anxious dogs and small breeds who like to feel snug.
- Sprawlers and stretchers prefer a flat mattress or sofa-style bed with room to spread right out.
- Older dogs and larger breeds benefit from memory-foam support that cushions aching joints and helps with conditions like arthritis — our memory-foam pet bed is a good example.
Step 3: Think about the practicalities
- Washability — a removable, machine-washable cover is essential for muddy-pawed British dogs.
- Placement — a quiet, draught-free corner where your dog can retreat but still feel part of the family.
- Puppies — buy for their adult size (or expect to size up), and choose something chew-resistant while they're teething.
A quick size guide
As a rough starting point: small breeds (up to ~10kg) suit beds around 50–60cm; medium dogs (10–25kg) around 70–80cm; large dogs (25–40kg) around 90–100cm; and giant breeds larger still. Always check the specific dimensions against your own measurements — breeds vary hugely.
